iPhone 5S - Why it is a case of "Its more than what meets the eye"

Its almost that time of the year when Apple releases its new iPhone for the year. This time around its probably going to be an iPhone 6 (unless Apple decides to not stick to the norm) - which makes this post almost a year late. Yes- a full one year.

There was a time when I wrote a lot about Apple and Steve Jobs and almost swore not to do it lest my blog be tagged as another Apple blog but I feel the need to write one now. I guess the hiatus is over!

When the iPhone 5S first came out, many people said that there was no innovation and that the TouchID was the only real addition which in itself was not game changing. On the outset that would be an accurate statement to make but the point that most people missed was about all the changes/updates/upgrades done under the hood which practically set Apple up for multiple future markets - each capable of being a game changer.

Here is what I think we will see in the future (While writing this post, I am going to try and remember my argument with people from a year ago and also imagine that time stood still since Apple released the iPhone 5S)

1. Touch ID - The future of passwords. If Touch ID is as robust as they claim, then apple could be using it not only for authentications to unlock the iPhone but for a lot more - maybe their version of the iWallet will have elements of Touch ID in it. It could be used to make payments to app purchases or for full blown shopping at the mall. Touch ID could help apple get into the mobile money business.
2. M7 Coprocessor - This I think is the most important piece of the new design which could easily miss anyone's radar. With M7, apple could actually offload work from the A7 onto the M7 for dedicated tasks. One such task that has already been widely published is about gestures since M7 controls the gyroscope, accelerometer and compass. Apple phones could possibly be used as a video game console -- maybe? Apple could have the whole mobile health industry by surprise in a couple of years and all that capability could be built on the M7. If not anything, this allows the battery life to be extended drastically for all the other cool things that the iPhone could do. With M7 Apple could be building up technology to take on 2 industries - the Gaming Consoles and Mobile Health
3. Productivity Apps -  With iPhone 5S, the productivity apps are all free. Could Apple be moving towards a Google Drive kinda approach where data from numbers, pages, keynotes, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are accesible everywhere. Could Apple be embracing the cloud in its entirety and entice people to start using Apple's productivity apps. Currently people go to Apple for devices and Google for apps. Maybe we will see a shift in that?

These are, I think the big 3 innovations/changes in the iPhone 5S which will have implications in the long run. We will see these manifest in more exploded forms in the near future 1-2 yrs is my guess.

And of course, all of this will be supported by industry's first 64bit processor(A7) on a mobile device.
With a HD Facetime camera, Slo-Mo features in the camera and more LTE antennas, one cannot go wrong with upgrading to the iPhone 5S especially if they are on the odd refresh cycle (3GS, 4S, 5S etc)
